SEOUL VELOCITY
FAST, CHEAP, MIXED: SEOUL, BEST LAB TO MAKE
Seoul is an appealing city for us because it brings together manufacturing, production, and consumption in one place. This results in cost-effective materials, labor, and transportation, and everything operates at a rapid pace. You can conceive an idea in the morning, sketch it out, place a production order by lunchtime, and receive a prototype model by day's end.
We believe that this environment makes Seoul the ideal location to create something remarkable.
From this standpoint, Seoul offers us abundant opportunities for conducting diverse experiments. Just as the 'Sweep2' command allows us to manipulate designs incrementally, we are experimenting with our ideas, taking advantage of the city's rapid, cost-effective, and diverse cultural landscape for exploration and experimentation.
『 What would you like to have?』was part of Public Design Festival 2022 hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism. The project looked at the balconies in Korean apartments and explored their architectural possibilities using the idea of a sushi restaurant's conveyor belt. We started with initial ideas and scripting and then created each object using 3D printers.
We were inspired by how artists in large-scale art and sculpture projects use a production system that involves a substantial team. Instead, we decided to utilize machines as part of our production staff in place of human labor. Fortunately, there was a manufacturing factory just 5 minutes away from our studio. Afterward, a specialized media art museum was impressed by our exhibition and invited us to showcase our work. As we thought about expanding our approach, we brought 3D-printed objects into the 2D realm using basic AI tools to generate drawings.
