SS2 Architects (formerly Studio Sweep2) is a Seoul-based architecture, design, and research practice founded in 2020. Through architecture, public space, installations, and applied research, the studio explores how design can respond to changing social, environmental, and technological conditions.
1. Design as an Evolving Journey
The name Sweep2 originates from Rhino’s Sweep2 command, in which form emerges through the relationship between rail curves and cross sections. This logic reflects our approach to design: the rails represent the fundamental conditions of a project—context, structure, program, and intention—while the cross sections respond to specific spatial, environmental, material, and social conditions. Rather than pursuing predetermined forms, we understand design as an evolving process shaped by the negotiation between stable frameworks and changing conditions.
2. Redefining Craftsmanship in the Post-Digital Era
SS2 Architects explores craftsmanship within a post-digital condition, where technology is embedded within processes of thinking and making rather than treated as an end in itself. We work across material experimentation, physical fabrication, digital analysis, and emerging technologies, treating traditional techniques and contemporary tools as complementary ways of producing architectural knowledge. Technology thus becomes a mediator between human intuition, material behavior, and design.
3. Research Through Practice
Research and design are inseparable within our practice. Each project becomes an opportunity to investigate materials, systems, assembly, environmental conditions, and patterns of use. Our work engages questions of reuse, reversibility, adaptability, and material cycles, considering architecture not as a fixed object but as something capable of transformation over time. Through observation, experimentation, and interdisciplinary collaboration, we develop project-specific responses to changing contexts and conditions.
